The novel seems to take place after the events of Vortex but before the events of Heat as Whitney Fordman has joined the marines but Lana is still in the process of editing and refilming the video tape that she will eventually send to Whitney.

Although the novel was released prior to Buried Secrets, the timeline may indicate that this is in fact happening after Buried Secrets given the nature of the development with Lana's subplot with Whitney.
